Food for Education: A New Site to Help Break the Cycle of Poverty in India
Each day in India, the Akshaya Patra Foundation serves over 1 million school lunches to children to help fight hunger, keep students in school, and help them focus on education. The goal is to help children and their families exit the cycle of poverty that often forces children to choose work over schooling to help contribute to their households. The Foundation's model goes a step further by also providing economic development strategies, employment, and support for local agriculture through the state-of-the-art kitchens that produce school meals daily throughout India.
The Foundation's U.S. branch, based in Boston, needed help reshaping their message and their website to appeal to an American audience. Message Agency was proud to work with the Foundation to help them tell their innovative (but complex) story and design and develop a website that would help propel their fundraising efforts.
In addition to needing a robust but easy-to-use set of fundraising tools on the site, Akshaya Patra also needed to better harness the Salesforce instance it had been using independently of the website to track revenue and supporter activity. We were able to provide a seamless integration between Drupal and Salesforce using the Salesforce Suite modules, which Message Agency originally developed and currently supports on Drupal.org.
The most innovative aspect of the site is the Fundraising Campaign tool, which allows Akshaya Patra administrators to create targeted campaigns with fundraising goals and expiration dates, and then allows site users to create their own fundraising pages to support that goal. Supporters can also create pages on their own to help raise funds for school lunches.
